Sustainability - Health & Safety
The health and safety of both our employees and visitors to site is paramount for WCL Quarries and its operation. Working closely with our Health and Safety Management Consultants ensures we comply and keep abreast of regulations, legislation and advice as issued and required by the Management of Health & Safety Regulations 1999. Our continued commitment to Health & Safety is highlighted by the OHSAS 18001:2007 accreditation awarded to us by the British Assessment Bureau, which we are very proud to have achieved.
Utilising our formal risk assessment process ensures the identification of any hazards and risks and the necessary associated control measures. Supported by a structured system to provide the appropriate health and safety training for all staff, the health and safety responsibilities of each employee is set out in their job specification and mirrored in the Company’s Health & Safety Policy Statement.
WCL Quarries operate a close team with clearly defined roles and responsibilities, reinforcing an effective management and communication structure and their ability to comply with the requirements is assessed at the point of recruitment and is then re-enforced and checked during the training induction on commencement of their employment.
The Company monitors the attainment of the standards and requirements on an ongoing basis, with regular re-training and briefings used to re-enforce and re-affirm. In addition, every opportunity and encouragement is given to employees to discuss safety matters with the managers and visiting safety staff.
WCL Quarries has never had any incidents recorded since it started operating. Always reviewing and monitoring its health and safety practices and operations, we impose strict requirements that appropriate PPE should be used and observed across the site. A PPE refresher training session is conducted on an annual basis and as and when required.
Hauliers are loaded by trained experience personnel and when loaded from the base of the quarry they are not permitted to get out of their vehicles unless directed to and accompanied by a WCL Quarries member of staff for safety/emergency precautions.
As part of our planning and licensing we also have regular visits and audits conducted by regulatory bodies including Staffordshire County Planning, Health & Safety Council and the Environment Agency.
