Sustainability - Environment
WCL Quarries is committed to the continual improvement of our environmental performance as detailed within our Corporate Environmental Management System and is proven with the attainment of our ISO 14001:2004 for Environmental Management accreditation.
Procedures are in place to cover all aspects of the operation and are at the core of everything we do. Detailed within the Site Manual they are essential requirements for all our Planning Permissions, Permits and Exemptions. Each operation is risk assessed using, as a minimum, the site Environmental Risk Assessments covering waste types, dust, stability, health effects and habitats, in addition to the Environmental Impact Assessment.
The risk assessments identify and record the potential hazards and their probable impacts. The assessments determine the adequacy of control measures within the procedures and provide a reference for training purposes. The legislative requirements of each operation are also highlighted.
Regular risk assessment reviews and monitoring is conducted by our trained internal team, and externally by Staffordshire County Council and the Environment Agency. With procedure safeguards and the monitoring of the imported source materials, the active prevention of environmental pollution is significantly reduced. Additionally, the preventative maintenance program WCL Quarries operates minimises the risk to safety, health and the environment; with soil bunds buffering any noise generated.
We are proud to state that we have an unblemished track record in regards to Environmental issue incident reporting.
Recycling a high percentage of what would otherwise go to landfill enables WCL Quarries to extend the lifespan of the site and the areas’ finite resources, providing a valuable local source for many aggregates that are in demand. This ‘full service’ approach has, and will continue to bring logistical savings and reduced transport charges to projects across the Midlands and surrounding areas.
Our Environmental advisors conduct regular environmental monitoring on site, supporting the Directors to ensure that all planning and regulations are adhered to. A key role in their involvement is to also ensure that WCL Quarries is kept up to date with new legislation and advise where and how improvements can be made across the operation and site management activities.
